Will trade deadline shake up the league leaders?

July 31, 1931: The Reds, Robins, White Sox and Yankees held their leads through July, but other GMs may shake that up as the trade deadline approached today. The St. Louis Browns, defending World Series champs, are only two games out of their race. The NL champs of 1926, New York Giants, are eight games behind the Robins.

Lefty_GroveLefty Grove continued to set new pitching standards for the Arcanum Baseball League with four more wins in July, boosting him to 20 wins already with two more months of baseball to play. At his current pace, the 30-year-old hurler for the Reds is projected to win 31 games. GM Ted Sloan notes that Grove, in real life, was the last pitcher to win 30 games in the AL until Denny McLain came along for the 1968 Tigers. Grove won the Cy Young Award last season with his 24-11 record and 2.84 ERA. He's first in all three key pitching stats this season with 20 wins, a 2.64 ERA and 152 strikeouts.

Lew_FonsecaLew Fonseca set a record last season with his 26-game hitting streak playing for the Tigers. He raised that streak to 31 games until it was snapped in July of this season. Lefty O'Doul holds the record now, hitting in 33 games earlier this season.

Jim_BottomleyJim Bottomley, the White Sox 30-year-old first baseman, became the first player in league history to hit three home runs in a game.

Robins holding strong; here come defending champ Browns

July 1, 1930: The Brooklyn Robins hold a commanding lead in the NL East, but everyone else is battling. The defending champ Browns are back in the race and nobody will take them for granted after last season's surprise.

The Reds have moved to the top in the NL West and are clearly the best team in baseball. They are first in everything -- hitting and pitching. Lefty Grove's 16 wins by July 1 amount to one of the best pitching performances ever witnessed. He is on pace to win an incredible 30 games. George Earnshaw is taking no back seat to Grove, however, actually winning the NL Pitcher of the Month Award in June with his 6-1 record. With this kind of performance, GM Ted Sloan is going to be very hard to catch and is reaping the harvest of a 1929 draft so focused on pitching. His staff is finally doing its job after a disappointing 1929 season. Earl Averill and Kiki Cuyler provide the offensive punch.

The Red Sox just can't catch the Yankees in the AL East. The Chicago White Sox command the top spot in the AL West.

We're still looking for our first no-hitter after nearly two years of league history.

Top 3 GMs in league history: Mike Sims (Cubs, 128 wins), Steve Gassmann (Yankees, 123), Ted Sloan (Reds, 122).

Six teams in first; Robins running away with NL East

June 1, 1930: Just like last season, the incredibly competitive GMs of the Arcanum Baseball League are all in striking distance to win a pennant. Six teams are tied for first after nearly two months of play.

The Brooklyn Robins are one of the only teams who dominated in this round and have a fairly secure lead in the NL East.

The Reds and Cardinals have the best record in baseball. But they also happen to be in the same NL West division so they're tied for first. How's that for competition?

The Evil Empire continues to lead the AL East, but can the commish cheat, alter stats, sim multiple times to be able to get his Red Sox to catch them?

The White Sox and Tigers are tied for first in the AL West.

Look at the news and stats for two Lefties in this round. Lefty Grove had one of the most dominant months in league history (8-0 in May; 12-0 for 1930) and Lefty O'Doul set a new Arcanum Baseball League record with his 33-game hitting streak. Remember that the commissioner traded O'Doul to the New York Giants, deciding that he only needed one .400 hitter in his lineup with Chuck Klein. Red Sox fans have one more reason to hoot down the GM. He gave up Babe Ruth to the Robins because of some stupid theatrical play and now O'Doul is gone.
